It’s always easy to think of the United States as the greatest market in the world, and ignore the rest of the world (except maybe our Canadian cousins) as we develop businesses and web sites. Often the next step is to simply clone the US site overseas, sometimes successfully, but often with poor results as the Ugly American syndrome raises its head. And for those businesses that can really help people improve their lives, e.g. health care, there are added problems when local issues are ignored.
So I’m really pleased to announce First Round Capital’s investment in the just launched medico.com web site. Elan Dekel, a former Google Executive with extensive international experience, connected with us last summer and described his concept of bringing locally sensitive health care information to the rest of the world. More than just WebMD for non-US, it would include the community and local health care providers, along with local language information, and local disease related information. Today’s launch is Medico.com in Spanish, targeted at Spain, and later the Latin American markets. By the end of this year, several other markets including India will be launched.
In each market, medico.com strives to find physicians who can answer questions and direct consumers to relevant information. There are already thousands of articles on the site, a twitter stream @Medico, and communities for key diseases (heart, diabetes, etc.) . One of the interesting drivers to our investment was finding out that is nih.gov one of the most heavily trafficked web sites from outside the US (for health information). There are also many countries where information about pregnancy care, STDS, etc. are hidden because of cultural biases that often prevent women from getting this information at home or in schools. Here medico.com can provide truly life saving information. And by later this year, it will also be on our mobile platforms, which dominate internet access in many countries.
Together with our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Julian Fisher, a neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, a member of the Harvard Medical School Faculty and a pioneer in health care information on the internet, Elan has built a strong international team. If medico can give people around the world the information and tools to become well-informed and take control of driving their health care, this will have been a worthwhile investment. Of course, our hope is to do exceptionally well while doing good; the business case looks very good.

What are your thoughts about single-payer health care?
Single-payer seems much better than universal health care.
Universal health care is everyone gets health care at some extent depending on wealth. Single-payer is everyone gets the same level of benefits in health care whether you are rich or poor.

Dan, agreed! If we're going to try to leaervge collective intelligence, it's not just the infrastructure, but a culture of support that includes providing the vision/mission, and assisting folks in figuring out how to bring it about, modeling and scaffolding good behaviors, and more. There're definitely new leadership skills that may be like what has been preached in leadership, but isn't well-exhibited in practice. At core, I reckon it's new values, which is actually a much harder change. Fingers crossed!

The baby boomers have made a life style for the young that no nitoan in the world has ever had. The cost of it has been great, the work they did was great. It is now time for the younger generation to stop sitting on their hands, and start a new phase, where responsibility is number one, before dependence on gov welfare. The main problem our civilization faces now is the unions. They are the ones people should be accusing of destroying the economy.Tuesday, July 6, 2010Labor Unions are killing the State of New YorkThere is no hope for a country when the corrupt become all-powerful. There is no hope for America when elections are rigged and manipulated by the Unions and corruption runs rife within both the main parties. Herbert I. London is president of Hudson Institute and professor emeritus of New York University and he discloses what he fears is happening to the State of New York. .A political force of enormous power has emerged, based on municipal employees. Between New York City and New York State there are approximately 625,000 public service employees. Assuming that there is at least one other voting member in their families (a conservative estimate), the 1,250,000 means, in effect, that this voting bloc controls two-thirds of an election, as it is estimated that two million votes are needed for a statewide position. This bloc invariably votes for the party or candidates that will extend public benefits and raise taxes. The reality in New York is that the extension of public expenditures has driven private capital out of the state and possibly out of existence. While it is assumed the Democratic party is culpable of fiscal irresponsibility, a claim that is clearly justified, the Republicans under Governor George Pataki and the majority in the State Senate, have been just as irresponsible .Their exorbitant pensions are killing cities, communities, states, and gov all over America.

good question. I don't think steociy will allow a disabled person to do without. The rules need to change. I raised 3 kids on my own, all healthy, that means no help from the taxpayer. When a child is disabled the family get benefits from birth, no matter what their income is. I think this ditty needs to be looked at. How many people have kids that produce income from birth? Then if the good ole social security would hire some full time investigators to look at these dead beats with the bad backs, better known as SSI, I bet they would save their cost in triplicate. Once caught as a scammer then that dead beat would have to pay back what they scammed from the system. Then what about the lazy bums that fight SS for years, while living on welfare? Do you know that when they finally win, they get thousands in back benefits and never pay a dime back to the state welfare system? We need change alright, but not on the backs of Seniors and the truly disabled.

about business and greed, the greed part only goes so far. People vote with their wtalels if they think the price is too high they won't buy it. A business that makes no profit is only existing, it can't expand, it can't hire more employees. It cannot do anything more than what it is currently doing. You use the term common good . That sounds a lot like redistribution of wealth and social justice and FDR and Lyndon Johnson. If you care about the freedoms you have left, you should educate yourself and try to fix what you think is wrong. And that would not be asking questions on Yahoo. You should read some honest history going from Teddy Roosevelt to the mid-70 s. Then you will have a much better understanding of why things are the way they are today. That's assuming you know the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Every decade in the last 100 years, futurists have declared the coming of the robotic age, but having been in robotics, I don't see much progress in the last 50 years. Orders of magnitude increases in chip density, speed and storage has led to only a marginal improvement in how robots and robotic widgets affect our lives. Put simply, most robots are just computers that move as they are told maybe with video feedback and a few other sensors. I am hoping that in this coming decade, the automation industry will finally fill in the last 2 most important features that will enable a robot revolution. These are adding high density tactile sensation and adding truly adaptive learning so that robots will finally learn increasing complex tasks by trial and error by themselves. The DARPA arm is already helping military veterans that have lost their arms with dexterous manipulations like eating and using tools. The obstacle is no longer going to be hardware, but rather a required paradigm shift in producing automated behavior. Decades of brilliant minds have shown that rule-based programming which is what almost all software is, is just not good enough to make a generalized human-like robot that can help people with tasks like washing our clothes, cleaning our bathrooms, supporting the lives of the elderly and handicapped, and replacing people in most manual labor in factories from sewing clothes to general assemby of most products. A new approach that mimics how people learn will need to insert a different type of software into computers that not only learns by itself but also learns to know how to learn new tasks.
